Cleft Lip and Palate
Cleft Lip & Palate may occur in various individuals
secondary to a genetic and/or mechanical disturbance during
development of the fetus. These conditions require a team approach
to diagnose and treat appropriately.
The diagnostic procedures and treatment involve counseling with
the surgeon as well as various allied health personnel involved
from prior to birth to adulthood of the patient. Associated Oral
& Maxillofacial Surgeons of Peoria surgeons are associated with
the cleft lip & palate team in Peoria. Our role in treatment of
the cleft lip and palate patient involves repair of the bony defect
associated with the bone that normally supports the teeth and nasal
floor (called the alveolar cleft) and reconstruction of upper jaw
retrusion that frequently occurs as a result of scarring from
multiple surgeries throughout the developmental years of the cleft
patient. Timing of these surgeries is vital to successful
outcomes.
